“A luxurious postpartum retreat center, the first of its kind on the West Coast. A place where mothers can take a few days after birth to unwind from the experience, get pampered, receive support from lactation experts, take newborn care classes and more.”
“ The Village in San Francisco in an effort to revolutionize—or, at least expand—postpartum care. These retreats take inspiration from robust postnatal care customs around the world—most notably, South Korea’s popular postpartum care centers, which feature around-the-clock infant care, massages, facials, fresh meals, and child-care classes, and can involve stays of up to a month..”

“Postnatal retreats: The newest health trend to pamper new parents.
From massages to monitored nurseries and more, luxury postnatal retreats are meant to pamper and recharge new parents after giving birth to best prepare them for parenthood..”
“It’s such a big thing to know you’re not alone and to have that support,” [a Village client] says. “For me, that was priceless.”
"Unveiled in July 2023, this San Francisco haven for new parents was founded by Jennifer Darwin, a former labor and delivery nurse turned doula."
"Postnatal retreats have been popular in Korea, where they are known as sanhujoriwon, since the 1990s; there, eight out of 10 new mothers check into one... In recent years, they’ve gained popularity across Asia and Europe and are just beginning to gain traction in the U.S."
I'm Jennifer Darwin and I have been working with babies and new parents for over 20 years. I started out working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse and would see new parents struggling to confidently take care of their new baby. The terrified look on those parent’s faces when we would discharge them to go home would break my heart. A lot can happen between leaving the hospital and when they would see their providers and pediatricians, I knew we had to do better.
That experience led me to becoming a Doula. As a Doula I am able to offer new parents resources and guidance to support them emotionally from pregnancy into parenthood. I hear people tell stories about how difficult it was for them in postpartum and that it wasn’t at all what they expected. My goal is to help make that special time in your life a more positive one. I created this Postnatal Retreat Center as a space to empower new parents and give them the skills to care for their new baby and have confidence in themselves.

" I was so overwhelmed at the hospital's postpartum ward (the constant interruptions, the firehose of information, and generally feeling like I had been hit by a bus after 30 hours of labor). Arriving to the Village was a haven compared to that experience. It was exactly what I needed in my overwhelmed state. ... I learned so much from the staff and felt so much more confident and more psychologically ready to be a parent when I returned home."

I cannot express enough how absolutely transformative my experience at The Village Postnatal Retreat in San Francisco was. As first-time parents and after a tough pregnancy, we were incredibly nervous about the transition to parenthood. This retreat was exactly what I needed. From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in an atmosphere of care and compassion that truly felt like a warm embrace during one of life's most vulnerable times

"As a first-time parent, I did not feel ready to go home after being discharged from the hospital. My time at the retreat center allowed me the chance to truly rest by being able to send our baby to the nursery. Had I gone home directly from the hospital, I would've felt physically exhausted and emotionally nervous. Instead, by the time we left, I felt excited and confident about going home and parenting my baby.
I didn't know what I needed postpartum, but the staff at the retreat center are experts in this life stage and they've thoughtfully designed an experience that meets those needs before you even know to ask for them.

Second Time Parents
"I stayed at the Village Postnatal Retreat Center after I had my second baby. It was nice to be able to relax and bond with my new baby without all the distractions of being at home. The staff took such good care of us while I recovered and got some much needed rest. They even washed and sanitized all my bottles and pump equipment for me. I didn't have to lift a finger and could just focus on bonding with the baby. I am definitely coming back when I have baby #3!!"
